After mailing the "Until" master copies to three Asian territories (at the National post office in Lawton), I visited Intramuros again and spent the entire afternoon there. It was a quiet day and the silence within the walled city is charming to me. As I always say, Intramuros is full of mystery. It speaks to me. It lures. It whispers.

[continued from a previous album exclusive only to very close friends]
The sun is up when I took a rare trip to the national post office located at Lawton, Manila. It's a short trip from where I live (thank God!) and based on the photos in this album, you already have an idea how many people send snail mails. Look!!! The post office looks like it's deserted. (I used to mail stuff here and I have observed a considerable decrease in human sightings). But I like this old building - its structure, the ventilation, the way sunlight peeps through the huge pillars, etc.
Snail mail is something I miss so much and I still continue writing letters from time to time. It's something many of the kids today do not appreciate. Receiving stuff by snail mail is always exciting for me. And replying (or sending something back) is always fun and memorable. The effort, the licking of the stamps, the act of dropping the letters/packages at the mailboxes....these can't be duplicated by mouse clicks, online inboxes or even by animated gifs. (plus the staff at the post office are still familiar faces - they flashed wide smiles during my visit and they're always friendly to me! Oh but I told them that one of them might be enjoying Swan Dive music by this time - Bill knows exactly what I mean by this.)
Until....is coming very soon.
[tomorrow: After the mailing, I went to Intramuros --- again!!! --- and made my first trip to Manila Zoo in years!!!]

As promised, this album (long overdue) will share my thoughts about the other cast members. The original role played by Miggy (Paolo Miguel Lopez) was originally intended for another talent. He backed out so Miggy (who was supposed to play the role of Ricky) was cast as the "main guy". Miggy is a regular in many of my shorts. He has already appeared in "Nykto", "Pink Brownies" and my upcoming full-length, "Alipo-op Sa Animo".
Working with Miggy is as easy as one-two-three. There's creative chemistry between us. I give simple instruction (as I always do) and he'd get it like I envisioned it to be. It's no wonder that you'd see him in many of my works and I intend to cast him in all my upcoming works if permitted.
Miggy is a creative soul and he's so down-to-earth so it's never a burden to work with him. But in "Until", I think he got so overwhelmed with Angel that his usual "one-take" performance got extended to five takes. During the shoot, I think I said, "You're supposed to look awed. Don't look like you're eating her." Of course, I was just joking.
The one who took Miggy's original role was Ricky (Pantaleon) who was kind enough to accept my invitation two days before the shoot. Thanks to his friend, Adrian, who was instrumental in connecting us both. I have been seeing Ricky around my favorite internet shop (where he used to hang out) in Pedro Gil and he'd just give regular customers a smile or two but I never had the chance to talk to him. Until we decided to cast him.
Ricky was another blessing to begin with. He's one of the earliest on the set and he'd just be sitting in one corner in between takes. Easy to work with, he'd throw smiles at everyone during the shoot. He's such a nice guy, if you ask me. Very respectful and very professional.

----------------- soundtrack: Saturday, Sunday, Monday by Swan Dive
Many people always ask me about the cast and how I go about the casting process. For starters, I wrote the treatment with Angel (Aquino) in mind. So everything you see in the final music video already played in my mind.
I came to know Angel way back in 2005 when we were both sent as Philippine delegates to the First Filipino Film Festival in Beijing (People's Republic of China). We went there together with National Artist Eddie Romero and director Jeffrey Jeturian. I have already heard great things about her and I wasn't just able to confirm them --- it went beyond expectations. Angel is so real and down-to-earth (just like Swan Dive - Bill and Molly - who are pure geniuses!). Every moment with Angel is time not wasted. Before we parted ways in Beijing ('coz she went ahead of us for a shoot in Hong Kong) she was sweet to leave us cute little gifts with matching personal note. I already told her I want to work with her someday. I did not know it would be that soon.
When Bill agreed on a collaboration, I immediately called Angel and told her about it. She told me that she's excited about the (then proposed) music video. We just had to look for that particular shooting date because she is always busy with her TV show and other commitments (everybody wants to work with her it seems).
Working with Angel on set is more thrilling than I expected. On record, I really do not cast celebrities and showbiz-related people in my films and videos and so this marks my first time (after 43 short films and 1 finished and yet unreleased full-length digital film) to cast a known (and respected) film actress and TV personality. I was always telling her: "Angel, my sets are simple and guerrilla type ha. It's usually just me and a handful of people." She'd just tell me, "Naku, that's okay. Ano ka ba."
On set, I'd just give simple instructions then she clarifies a very few things and then we'd do the take. A great 98% were just done in one take. We'd only take more if I want to take other angles so I can "sew" them together during editing. I love the way she shows her emotions here in "Until". She shows what I exactly wanted. I want her to be a little restrained here and its a great wonder how much restraint she shows (considering restraint is not much practiced in Philippine cinema acting).
Angel is also an intelligent collaborator. She makes very apt suggestions and I would readily give in to them because they all make so much sense creatively or otherwise. I can go on and on with this but all in all, Angel is a joy to work with. Words are not enough to describe her beauty, talent and attitude. I am more than delighted to collaborate with her. She's such a joy to work with. As a director, I am creatively fulfilled in doing this music video with her. And I hope to work with her again, God willing.
[next: I will share my thoughts about the other cast members - to be continued]

Call me old-fashioned but I still prefer some things to remain analog. For a filmmaker like me, there are images that needs to be shot the analog way because, at times, I aim for textures or moods captured visually. I'm not a fan of shooting digital and manipulate images to look "old" using modern editing suites. For example, modern video can't achieve the look and feel of 8mm - which is "homey" and very "personal".
For "Until", I want a very traditional way of doing things. In the treatment I emailed to Swan Dive, I specifically mentioned that I do not want gimmicky editing. I want traditional cut-to-cuts and a few dissolves if needed. Even during the shoot, I did not use a single special effect coming from the camera I used. I just want to shoot things as is and let the action flow naturally.
It is important, I think, not to get carried away by too much new stuff. Don't get me wrong....I love changes in technology. But I also don't like to say goodbye to the old way of doing things. New music videos these days concentrate too much on how to project the music artist's "image" rather than concentrate on the imagery that should complement the music. Swan Dive agreed with me when I mentioned to them in one of those online exchanges that the images should complement the song (and not to overpower it). But "Until" is such a powerful track that is both nostalgic and heartfelt - to overpower it demands difficulty.
"Until" deserves some "analog" treatment and discipline. Analog stuff demands a lot of discipline and it's one thing I miss so much about it. (Not to mention that these days analog/film stuff can be very expensive.) These days anyone can edit, anyone can shoot and anyone can put up a gimmick. The same thing goes with music. There's so much revivals....nothing original anymore. There's so much creative laxity and less of creative discipline. Bill has something to say about the current technology too: "The same way you wish for film, we wish for analog tape to record on. It's just become prohibitively expensive to work that way for us."

I work really fast that's why I take advantage of my excitement over a certain project when I do post-production. My biggest problem of late is my PC. It cannot, for lack of space, anymore perform post-prod duties. So Acheng and Orbz came to the rescue. Another big problem with editing is the rendering part where you wait forever to see a 10 second clip. And the longer the clip, the more years it take you to render.
I'm glad Swan Dive and the rest of the team understand the whole process of editing. Bill (of Swan Dive) was telling me how he saw his friend (director) Kip Kubin edit their "Tender Love" music video. He saw how slow it was considering Kip was editing in Mac. In contrast, I edit in PC.
In "Until" I want a grainy look that resembles 16mm film. Of course it impossible to replicate 16mm's grains but it's a "pseudo-grain" attempt. It also took me some time mixing colors and making textures a little even. In some scenes, I have to go frame by frame to get the color, shadows, textures and levels I wanted. I enjoy doing post-prod chores but I'm contemplating on learning how to do it in Mac. Mac now tops my wish list for this year's Christmas.

Creative freedom is very rare these days especially if you talk about collaborating with fellow artists. So imagine my reaction when Bill & Molly (of Swan Dive) gave me artistic leeway as to the treatment of their beautiful and nostalgic song "Until". As artists themselves, it was risky of them to give me complete trust but it is the same trust that fuels me (and the team) to deliver something inspired.
I enjoyed watching Swan Dive music videos (they're fun and lively) and "Until" is a slight departure from those videos but this collaboration has all the blessings of Swan Dive. Creativity within truly overflows without outside intervention. So imagine how memorable it will be when you collaborate with independent-minded artists. Swan Dive didn't win the Independent Music Awards twice (for Best Album of the Year) for nothing.

I think too few people know that this is my first music video by a non-electronica act. My first four were all electronic artists. But then again, Swan Dive songs can easily get remixed being very rich in melody as in their hit "Circle" (from the album of the same title) remixed by the High Llamas. It was a different creative high doing something different and creating it for artists whose music has been very inspiring (if not influential).
I first got a taste of Swan Dive way back in 1998 via their album "Circle". All the songs lasted repeated listening. They didn't wear off. I remember listening to "Goodbye September" again and again last year (2006) when I was left hanging by a dearly beloved. Swan Dive songs affect people because, as I see it, they're very inspired songs.
This reminds me much of a set any filmmaker will envy. Despite our humble budget, I'm blessed with enthusiastic young collaborators who simply share what they can to make the whole thing a success. Inspired set? Oh yes! Very! It's as if every hour during the shoot....time speaks to me....whispering the word "Until" over and over again....assuring me of a love I long for....a love I deserve.....(I'm a mush! hahaha!).....
It was funny I told Angel - from out of nowhere - "I need a portion of your beauty, Angel! I've been loveless for a year now!" (People on the set were laughing within. Angel gave me a wide smile. I laughed hard when reminded about what I said. I enjoy laughing at my own mistakes. hahahaha!)

This Monday, October 22, 2007, there will be an Exclusive Screening of UNTIL music video by SWAN DIVE for the cast and crew. The screening will be at historic Intramuros where the video was shot. Venue will be announced via text to cast and crew.
Our friends Bill and Molly (Swan DIve) have already seen the music video as I write this blog and they have already sent their comments via e-mail. We're most happy that they're excited and pleased with the outcome. Here's the first three sentences of their message:
"WOW, IT'S SO GREAT!!!! WE LOVE IT!!! It's really a beautiful and sensitive treatment of the song! And it's over much too soon!"
Congratulations to all the cast and crew! Million thanks to Angel, Cheng, Tin, Orbz, Miggy, Veejay, Blezi, Kingand the rest of the wonderful cast & crew! See you on Monday! There is nothing more satisfying than being appreciated by the music artists themselves. Bill & Molly, this is doubly exciting and inspiring for us!Cheers!
after five days after endless technical problems after numerous sips of coffee after puffs of cheap cigarettes after eating almost anything being barbecued after giving Dean Gemma, Ms. Angel and Ma'am Ludz highblood after an inspiring week after sleepless nights after days of not texting and receiving calls from friends after eating pasta, siopao, pizza, nuts, balut, etc with Tin and Jen after switching to three editing suites after getting blinded by textures and colors (thanks to the abnormal weather during the shoot) after being inspired by people I'm fond of after listening and downloading beautiful Swan Dive songs
the final cut of Until music video by Swan Dive is already finished at exactly 6:59 pm on the nineteenth of October year of our Lord two thousand and seven
to quote Miggy & Orbz: "Fabulous direk!" (this has become a joke in our circle)
I hope my friends, Bill and Molly (Swan Dive) will enjoy this one just as we all enjoyed doing it
one thing remains.....UNTIL.....

Shooting this music video is no joke. Planning took me more than a month and finding the right people to collaborate with took some time. But what could have been a difficult process turned into an easy one like everything fell into place. That's when I told myself that this project was meant for me and the rest of the team. This one is certainly a blessing because filmmakers rarely get the project they didn't even imagine doing; collaborating with music artist friends (like Swan Dive) whom they admire and respect --- and working with some of the best young talents in the country.
Costumes were a big part of this music video and finding the right costume designer has been a daunting task. In fact, it is this aspect of production (aside from the budget) that dragged the principal photography. Initially, I texted friends and acquaintances who are into fashion, design and the arts, hinting of a possible collaboration. There were many who were interested but it all boiled down to creative chemistry between me and the designer. I already have a "look" for the video so the costume designer must know how to interpret my vision. Luckily, I got what I was looking for in (both) young and emergent fashion designer, Veejay Floresca (whose stunning wardrobe perfectly matched the beauty of Angel) and talented artist, Francis Jove de la Cruz (who immediately got what I wanted in just a snap of a finger and produced impressive costumes despite the lack of budget). I can go on and on describing how inspiring this collaboration was.

Finally, the day came when all our preparations have come to an end. It's our final day of shoot and we're all excited because this is the day that Angel will be joining us. Everyone was waiting for this day. After all the hassles of permits, funds and other technical considerations, the team was able to pull off something many can't.
The shoot was quick (as my pace is not attuned to that of mainstream shoots) because we are working on a shoe-string budget (this being self-produced with the big help from my friend, Cheng). We started at 8:00am and ended at 2:30pm (we have to stop shooting thrice because rain was pouring heavily). If not for the tricky weather, we could have wrapped up before lunch time.
